Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) is an anabolic steroid hormone produced by the adrenal glands of humans and some higher primates from cholesterol. It is found in the brain, adrenals, ovaries, testes, adipose tissue, skin and blood as DHEA sulfate (S-DHEA). It is also widely used in the production of other hormones, such as estrogen and testosterone.
